Dear SFUSD community

Our mission at Pupil Services is to ensure that all schools in our district have what they need to create Safe and Supportive Schools for students, parents and staff. We have a great team of energetic talented people who are working to respond quickly and comprehensively to school needs.  Our team consists of Pupil Services Staff, Counselors, Restorative Practice Coaches, Positive Behavior Coaches, Behavior Specialists, Attendance Liaisons and Child Welfare Attendance Liaisons. On this website you will find information about the resources that we offer to schools, students and families. We are committed to continuous improvement and so we need your feedback to help us improve.  You can use the feedback tab on this page to help us with this.

Best wishes,

Thomas H. Graven

Executive Director of Pupil Services

Origins:  The Behavior RTI (BRTI) framework arose out of the California Department of Education findings in 2011-12 that SFUSD was significantly disproportionate in our suspension, expulsion and referral for Special Education and African American students. In response, the district developed the SD-CEIS (Severely Disproportionate Comprehensive Early Intervention Services plan) which included Behavioral RTI and increased the district’s current Restorative Practices program as high leverage strategies. In the 2013-2016 SFUSD Strategic Plan, Behavioral and Instructional RTI, (RTI₂) is the  of the five key priority initiatives.

One in three California students reported being bullied

Did you see this article from a statewide student survey about bullying?

"At Everett, she said, classroom teachers hold weekly classroom circles to check in with students on topics including bullying, are coached to create a welcoming environment including greeting students with a smile, and use social and emotional strategies as part of classroom instruction. One such strategy is the Good Behavior Game, in which middle school students and teachers decide which classroom behaviors they’d like to see reduced, such as talking out of turn, and then teams of students compete to follow the rule and win a prize. The Good Behavior Game has been widely studied and proven to have long-term effects on students’ mental health, alcohol and drug use and smoking."
